"It’s taken time, but I think we’re getting our heads around it" – Gardner on Yamaha’s R1 progress after his Race 2 P5
After a FP1 crash on Friday, and a Sunday morning P15 in the Tissot Superpole Race, Gardner righted the ship with a fifth-place finish in Race 2
Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) responded well to tough sledding to start out at the Autodrom Most to claim his second-best result of the 2025 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship season. Following his Tissot Superpole Race finish in P15, Gardner capped Most’s weekend off well to finish P5 from his P10 start position during the Motul Czech Round.
FIGHTING THROUGH ADVERSITY: “I was struggling a little bit physically to be honest after getting banged up from the crash and tweaking my ankle again”
FP1 saw a host of the grid’s riders take spills off into the gravel, Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) and Andrea Iannone (Team Pata Go Eleven) each suffered big high-side crashes, as well as Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) lowsiding just before. He had no major injuries from the crash however felt considerably banged up from that point in the weekend on. Despite having to compensate for his injured ankle by using his arms more to control the bike, he did so well and earned himself a P5 to close the weekend. In his pursuit of P5, he did well to battle with and overtake riders like Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) and Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team).
In Gardner’s eyes, the Yamaha bikes benefitted from the cooler conditions, helping him deal with aches and pains from his crash earlier in the weekend. He said: “Track conditions and temperature helped the Yamaha bikes on Sunday to keep up the corner speed, I honestly don’t know where my pace came from on Sunday; halfway through the race I saw 1’31.2s on my dashboard which honestly surprised myself, but it felt really good. I was struggling a little bit physically to be honest after getting banged up from the crash and tweaking my ankle again. I couldn’t push on the foot pegs very hard, so I was having to ride the bike with my arms, and this is a pretty physical track, but I stuck it out and managed to bring home a good result so it’s like a victory for us.”
“I think our races depend on the first laps and Superpole because in our package it’s really hard to fight in the group” – Gardner on his sensation with the R1 this season.
While Gardner’s weekend was hampered by the Friday crash, he and the grid’s other Yamaha bikes have been on a clear upward trend since introducing their superconcession chassis. Prior to Yamaha and Gardner receiving the chassis, he had registered three P10s and three DNFs . Since the chassis, he has had five top-tens including an Assen Race 2 podium. If he and his team can continue to “get their heads around” the new and improved R1, then we may see more of Gardner in the podium fight like we saw at Assen.
On the R1 and how he’s seen his teammates and his own performances on the bike, he said: “I think our races depend on the first laps and Superpole because in our package its really hard to fight in the group. It’s not easy to have a good first lap every time and keep that speed at the start of the race when you’re out there sharing track with other riders. From Assen on, since getting this new chassis and package it took us a little time to work out, when I got it in Portimao I struggled, but from Assen on, I think we’re starting to get our heads around it. If we can keep this performance up, then I’d be really happy with that.”
